Pickles Reef Home of such sites as The Pillar Coral Patch, and The Barrel Wreck, this low profile reef offers a unique view of soft corals, sponges, and a number of crustaceans. Several species of lobsters and crabs may be openly observed here, often unconcerned about the activities of divers and snorkelers. As a rule, if you don't present a threat (by getting "too close") you will be able to observe these creatures as they go about their normal activities.
The site of a civil war era wreck. This reef now hosts the concrete cylinders which once were dry cement in barrels being shipped by barge. The large number of them in this barrel shaped form gave rise to the name Pickle Barrel Reef, which is now generally called just Pickles reef. A really great site for snorkelers and divers, depths range from 6 to 30 feet. Large patches of sea fans dot the underwater landscape. A favorite area of the reef is called SNAPPER LEDGE, it might have more fish in one spot than any other area in Key Largo.
Depth range 5-35 ft.
