Sand Island

Sand Island is a northern extension of Molasses Reef. The local folk lore states that Sand Island was at one time an actual island that was washed away by Hurricane Donna in 1960. Sand Island is a shallow reef system that is has large amounts of invertebrates and juvenile fish life. This is a small patch reef with good Elkhorn coral stands. It is well known for Golden Tail Eels and Flamingo Tongues. If you take your time and look around, this reef will surprise you with the amount of life on it.
